Harden HA sponsors Respect programme

Pupils across Birmingham are being given lessons in how to be good citizens in a bid to reduce ASB.
Following the success of the project, delivered by the Children's Safety Education Foundation Birmingham housing provider Harden Housing Association is continuing to sponsor the programme for another year to help keep communities safe.
Secondary school pupils at Smiths Wood School took part in the 'Respect' educational programme, which informs young people to help them make the right choices and promote greater independence and wellbeing in life.
As part of the 'Respect' programme, the young people studied the affects that hate crime, anti-social behaviour, gang culture and gun and knife crime have on society.

ACPO comment on ASB consultation document

Responding to the review of ASB, ACPO says that any approach must recognise the harm that anti-social behaviour causes and it will support a simplification of the tools and powers available to frontline practitioners

YOTs future unclear

The role youth offending teams will play in the future is still up for debate, justice minister Crispin Blunt has told CYP Now.
Despite speculation that youth offending teams could take on a mainly commissioning role and that more frontline roles would be handed over to the voluntary sector and private providers, Blunt said no decisions had been made.

Metal thieves caught and jailed in Swansea

Two thieves have both been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for their part in a metal burglary in Swansea, after being caught with the help of SmartWater. A Swansea council property had been targeted in previous raids, during which copper piping had been ripped out and stolen. So the local authority fitted a SmartWater device, which sprays a high-tech liquid on intruders

Night vision goggles are being used by police in Essex to tackle ASB in parks. Officers are being be deployed in areas, such as parks, to look for teenagers who cause trouble after dark.

Prime Minister to launch National Citizen Service pilots for young people

The Prime Minister will today announce plans for 16 year olds to take part in National Citizen Service pilots next summer.
Government-backed pilots for the scheme will start next summer and will provide around 10,000 places. Aimed at school leavers aged 16, the pilots will take place from June to September, following the end of the exam period, and will last for seven to eight weeks.
NCS aims to give every 16 year old the chance to learn new skills that will help them to make a positive contribution to their community.

Housing powers devolved to Wales
21st of July 2010
Parliament has approved a legislative competence order that will transfer a range of powers over housing from Westminster to Cardiff. As well as giving the Welsh assembly the ability to suspend the right to buy, the order will allow it to look at the regulation of social landlords, homelessness provision, bringing empty homes back into use, and security of tenure.
