8th of March 2012

The Welfare Reform Bill is scheduled to receive Royal Assent and becomes law today, Thursday 8 March.

The Act will bring fundamental changes to housing benefit, such as:

 - Introducing a single benefit (known as universal credit) as a replacement for a number of currently separate benefits
 - Reducing housing benefit payments for working age social tenants who are under-occupying their homes.
